Post Graduation for MBBS Doctors from India in Ireland

Postby vj2011 » Mon May 07, 2012 1:25 pm

Hi All,

I am Venky, I live in Dublin. My younger brother had finished his MBBS from RIMS, AP and planning to go abroad for PG. Ireland is one of the option he is thinking about. Any MBBS doctor pursuing MD or MS in Ireland? I have a couple of questions regarding the entry requirements, the value for the PG degree in India after finishing PG here and suggested best universities for MD or MS in Ireland. I would be great full if some one can help me in this regard.

Many Thanks

Venky

I had done a MSc from TCD, back in 2003. the entry requirements varies depending course selected, however undergrad degree from good indian univ and TOFEL/IELTS score are pre requisite. The master's is usually 2 years with a dissertation project . UCD too has good masters programs. I would say a masters from TCD or UCD will have a good value in India.

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate. Does the universities here offer MS or MD like in India? or is the M.Sc degree is equivalent to MS or MD in India? May I ask you if you are working in Ireland or in India? My Brother has plans to go back to India and work there after finishing PG here.

Hi here MS is same as MSc , TCD/UCD also offer MD, for admission in MD you need to be registered as doctor in Ireland (under category 4) , for this you will need to get certificate of equivalent, all info can be found on medicalcouncil DOT ie . I am working in Ireland.

Regarding the post graduate courses-
There are post graduate course like MRCP(Medicine) ,MRCOG(Gynae),MRCS(surgery) MICGP(GP) ect --For these course, you need to have Medical council registration and do a rotation or training posts and once the requirement is completed then you can appear for the exams in respective colleges. There is no specific course fee but there are registration and exam fees payable to colleges. For consultant posts in ireland and UK these degrees are essential and they don't consider M.Sc as equivalent as far as i know. These degrees are recognised by Australia as well.
Regarding M.Sc.Programme--Trinity offers but course fee is approx 14,000 euros per yr and it is 2 yrs programme.
Another point you asked is weather it is recognised equivalant to MS and MD in india?--Till recently none of the post graduate course of Uk/Ireland were recognised in India as British govt derecognised out PG course so indian govt did viceversa.I heard that indian medical council changed this and they started recognising some degrees but i am not 100% sure about it and make sure with Indian medical council .In private practice it is immaterial but for govt jobs in india and teaching jobs they need recgnition

There are no post graduation degrees in Ireland like in India or other countries but in order to specialize in Ireland u need to get registered with Irish medical council , for that go to medical council website and then if u passed from India i think u need to pass PRES exam and IELTS . once u r registered start searching for jobs on training posts for 2 years then u have to pass the exam MRCP (medicine) or MRCS (Surgery)or whatever u wanna be. then u have to apply for specialist training post which is from 4-6 years post , after finish working on those posts u get specialist registration which is acceptable all over EU and in AUS, Canada , Newzealand. If u want to do MSc or other course then they r just sucking ur time and money , no use to do in Ireland. i hope i helped u.

I believe there is a registration exam and I am ready to work hard for it but what are the chances of clearing it being an Indian graduate and also what are my chances if I want to settle down there .. Will I get jobs etc.. Please help as the medical council site is very confusing.

hello friends ,
I am also a doctor from India seeking help regarding the registration process . The website is very confusing . I called up the IMC straight and asked for the procedures. Indian Degree and internship is not valid here , so we may have to give IETLS and then start with the application form , Once they have been verified , We give the PRES 2 & PRES 3 exams . Only after we qualify for the two we are registered here . But again, thats just the general division.
I would like to have information on Postgraduate training . Am i allowed to pursue postgraduation in ireland??
